World Cup Travelers Could Risk Losing Thousands of Euros Over U.S. Border Problems

Travel to the USA for the World Cup 2026

ESTA approval is not the same as guaranteed entry

Many European football fans will travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, using an approved ESTA instead of a visa. ESTA allows eligible travelers to board a flight or ship to the U.S., but the final decision is made at the border by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. The U.S. Department of State clearly states that an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States.

That means a fan could have already paid for World Cup tickets, accommodation, flights and internal transport, only to face extra questioning at the airport. In serious cases, travelers can be denied admission and sent back home.

Why World Cup trips are financially risky

A World Cup trip is rarely a simple weekend getaway. Fans may book long-haul flights, several hotel nights, match tickets, train journeys or domestic flights between host cities. Some supporters may also buy tickets for multiple games, especially during the group stage or knockout rounds.

If a traveler is delayed, refused entry or forced to return home, the financial impact can be significant. Non-refundable flights, hotel bookings and match tickets may be difficult or impossible to recover. For fans traveling as a family or group, the total loss can quickly reach several thousand euros.

What can trigger problems at U.S. customs?

Border issues do not only happen to people with obvious immigration problems. Travelers may be questioned if their answers are unclear, their documents do not match their travel plans, or officers have concerns about the purpose of the trip. CBP also states that all persons arriving at a U.S. port of entry are subject to inspection.

Common risk areas include:

  • Not having clear proof of return travel
  • Giving inconsistent answers about accommodation or match plans
  • Staying too long or appearing to work while traveling as a tourist
  • Carrying restricted food, medicine or other items
  • Having previous visa, ESTA or immigration issues
  • Being unable to explain how the trip is being funded

CBP also warns travelers to check rules for prohibited and restricted items before entering the U.S. Certain foods, medications and other products may be restricted or require declaration.

A World Cup ticket does not override border rules

Having a match ticket, hotel booking or official tournament plan does not guarantee admission into the United States. The World Cup is a major sporting event, but regular immigration and customs rules still apply.

For fans, the lesson is simple: plan the football trip, but also plan the border process. A few extra checks before departure could protect thousands of euros and prevent a dream World Cup trip from turning into an expensive travel nightmare.

Final checklist for World Cup travelers to the U.S.

Before traveling, make sure you can clearly answer these questions:

  • Why are you visiting the United States?
  • Which World Cup matches are you attending?
  • Where are you staying?
  • When are you leaving the U.S.?
  • How are you paying for the trip?
  • Are you carrying any restricted items?
  • Do you have all confirmations available offline?

The 2026 World Cup should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many fans. But for travelers heading to U.S. host cities, preparation should go beyond buying match tickets. Border rules matter — and ignoring them could be very expensive.
